Alcoholism, A Former and Current Problem
The
consumption of alcoholic beverages is as old as humanity’s origin itself and it
has been a part of various cultures and eras. Some scholars point out that
probably the origin of the first wines gave humanity a way to inactivity. The
use of wine was associated, by its effects, various religious cults. It was served
as an essential beverage in social gatherings.
We could say
that it is a custom that has accompanied the very development of peoples in
different times, making it a part of culture. The big difference with the times
to seniority is that in this modern world, drinking is for everyone. The abuse
of alcohol today is one of the leading causes of death along with other
diseases. In youth, the problem is even greater. The abuse of alcohol causes
hundreds of young people drop out of school and causing chaos in the family,
which has effect in most of the time leaving home. Personally, I consider it
important to keep balance in all aspects of life. No excess is productive for any
person.
Drinking
alcohol is harmful only if we abuse on ingestion. It is a part of social
custom, as we have seen, since it is deeply rooted for centuries and most
likely will continue. What not to continue is its abuse.
The downside
is that sometimes, because of the unconsciousness of those people who are in ecstatic
state, many innocent ones pay the consequences and a typical example would be a
car accident. A man who is drunk and goes and hits another driver, who has not
been at fault, however, because of the accident, dies. It is a truly unjust
situation.
Therefore,
drinking alcohol can become a serious problem for the person if you get to
abuse it. In other words, it can become a disease. The World Health
Organization (WHO) defines alcoholism as alcohol dependence syndrome. It is
clear that this is a disease whose consequences affect not only the person who
has it, but society itself.
According to WHO,
‘Alcohol causes death and disability at a relatively young age. In the age
group of 20-39 years, 25% of deaths are attributable to alcohol.’ Data on the
excessive consumption of alcohol are alarming. An estimated 3.3 million people
die each year as a result of harmful use of this substance. That number
represents 5.9% of total annual deaths.
Social
environment and personal circumstances influence much for a person to become
dependent on this drug. For example, something bad that happened in the family,
some tragedy, the departure of a loved one, fights or domestic arguments are the
situations where, generally, many try to escape by taking refuge in alcohol, wrongly
believing that ingesting too much these drinks could ease their sufferings.
It is
observed that alcoholic drinks have been in use in culturally since ancient
times and there is no harm if it is continued in this manner. In the current
times, its use has become a habit with excessive consumption and it must be
stopped in order to avoid social, financial and psychical hazards.
