Imagine your
family changes city on business, or perhaps decide to find a more suitable
school for your child, in the worst case scenario, the current school asks to
change for poor grades or inappropriate behavior of your child. Changes always
cost labor, and children represent a special challenge. How can you help your
child make a successful transition when changing the school?
As far as possible, involve your child in school choice
If you cannot
visit before because the school is in another city or another country, get
information and images online for your child to go along with the
options.
As a family, define their priorities
If the child is
young, perhaps the proximity of the school is important. For older children, it
is the most important academic, sports facilities and opportunities after
admission to other prestigious institutions.
Help your child to see this change as an opportunity
Entering a new
school where nobody knows you frees to be who you want to be. Where once your
child has not succeeded, or was shy or labeled by his/her behavior, now it is
his/her chance to be somebody else.
Prepare your child for the first day of classes
Find out about
the tools he/she needs, the cost of lunch in the cafeteria, etc. Help him/her
to choose the clothes to be put on, and arrange the backpack to be well
equipped to have a successful first day.
Encourage your child to participate in extracurricular activities
Being a member of
the football team or taking drama classes at school in the afternoons allows
the child to integrate faster to in his/her new school’s community.
Always emphasize the positive side
Nostalgia for the
old school is natural at first, so help your child enjoy the new place focusing
the positive aspects.
Support your child in search for new friends
Send an extra
treat in the lunch to share it with anyone at recess and meet the parents of
his/her classmates. Encourage your child to invite a companion home on Fridays;
it is better to invite one at a time for a closer coexistence between your
child and the other kids.
Accept the change
As a family, put
on the shirt of the new school and become active member of the community, going
to all events with enthusiasm. This will help your child to regain a sense of
belonging much needed for healthy development.
Give Assignment Help
As
you kid gets used to the new school, you must give him/her proper assignment help, so that
your kid can cope with other challenges in school.
